Our first cruise and first long trip since spring of 1999. We started in Seattle for 2 days and then took the ferry to Victoria for a day. From Victoria, we took another ferry to Vancouver for 3 days and then boarded the Sea Princess to sail the inside passage to Anchorage. We had two days and one night in Anchorage before returning home.

Ireland 2002

02-32-24.JPG

Our first international trip in January 2002. We left from Boston and arrived Dublin Ireland. Within 30 minutes of the twisty Irish Roads, we were lost trying to find our B&B and had a flat. Sharp stones, small roads and driving on the left were not a good match. This was our only trouble on a wonderful trip.

San Francisco 2002

02-55-03.JPG

We spent 3 days in San Francisco in the summer of 2002 before continuing on to Hawaii. Our trip was in combination with two sessions that I presented at the Hawaii International Conference on Business at Waikiki.

We also took a cruise of the islands on Norweagan and were very disappointed in their freestyle cruising and service on the ship.

Hawaii 2002

02-79-33_jpg.jpg

Our travels brought us to Hawaii in the summer of 2002 for a conference in Waikiki. I presented two sessions at the Hawaii International Conference on Business. We started in San Francisco and then 3 days later arrived early in the morning in Hawaii. We stayed at Shearaton at Waikiki for a night and then went to board the Norwegean Star for a week cruise.

The cruise was not the best. Nothing disasterous, but not a good value with poor food and service. We arrived back at the Shearaton for 1 week for the conference and a little sight seeing on Oahu.

Scotland 2003 - Castles

IMG_0999.jpg

Scottish Castles. Edinburgh Castle in Edinburgh Scotland sits high above the city of Edinburgh below. The castle is the home of the Scottish Crown Jewels and features Margaret's Chapel, memorial to Scottish war dead and an exhibit of Scottish military regiments.

Sterling Castle was built by the Stewart Kings of Scotland. It is located near the sites of battles by William Wallace (Braveheart). These battles occured after the castle's construction. Sterling was later a British military base and then became a part of the national trust.

Urquhart Castle sits on Loch Ness and was fought over for many years. It was under the control of the English, Scottish Crown and Clan McDonald depending on the year.

Scotland 2003 - Culloden

IMG_3375_R.jpg

Culloden was the sight of the last battle for Scottish Independence. The Scottish forces were led by Bonnie Prince Charlie and were called the Jacobites. The were tired and fought the well rested, more powerful English in a location that was not conducive to their fighting style. After the loss, Prince Charlie fled to France and later died in Italy.
The Clan way of life of faded into history and the language of Gaelic and Scots were almost lost. The English made it illegal to play the pipes, wear the tartan or any part of the highland manner of dress. Many Scots left for America in the wave of this persecution.

IMG_2682.jpg

Rome -- The Eternal City. Rome is famous for it's landmarks. The Colosseum was originally called the Flavian Ampitheatre after its builders, the emperors Vespasian and Titus, both of the Flavian family. Construction began around 70 AD in a low lying area between the Palatine, Esquiline, and Caelian hills that had once formed the pond of Nero's Domus Aureus. The ampitheatre probably came to be called the "Colosseum" because a colossal statue of Nero once stood near it.

Our trip to Egypt started with a short visit to New York. We had hoped to really see the Statue of Liberty, but it was still not open. We did a quick bus tour of New York and then the next day went to Ellis Island for our second visit to this landmark. Before the trip to the island, we did get to take a harbor tour around New York including viewing Yankee Stadium and the UN.

The most striking parts of the country were the souqs and medina in Fes along with soqs in Marakesh and casbah in Rabat. The most intersting part of the tour was visiting Mr. Omar's house in the Ourika Valley.

China 2006

We traveled to the east and arrived in the Central Kingdom or Middle Kingdom -- China. China is an ancient society and one that is often misunderstood by those in the west.

China is the third largest country in the world, next to Canada and Russia, it has an area of 9.6 million square kilometers, or one-fifteenth of the world's land mass. It is noted for such archaeological treasures as The Great Wall, the TerraCotta Warriors and the bronze bells of Wuhan.

The trip started in Beijing and then went to Xian, Chong ching and on a river cruise up The Yangtze River. We left the ship in Nanjing and then went by coach to our last stop in Modern Shanghai.
